It is that time of year again when all thoughts turn to warmer weather. Even though we have at least two months before we can even begin to think about backyard bbq’s, Tom is looking ahead. The one thing lacking on our party patio is a good fire ring. In this article we will share with our readers the step by step process of building a heavy duty fire ring for the backyard. Tom begins by collecting “junk” that he had been saving up for a project just like this. The body of the fire ring is an old cut off top to a tank. The base of the entire unit is an old pipe ring that was lying around the shop. The fire ring is built to “spin” out of the Wyoming wind. Tom used an old spindle and rim from a junked out lawnmower to make the spin feature. The used sprocket locks in place using a piece of half inch steel round stock. A foot petal was added for easy adjustment.
Eighth inch plate was used for the back and side walls of the firepit. Tom first welded on the plate and then cut it to size using a cutting torch. The front edge of the firepit is a piece of 1/4″ X 2″ hot rolled strap and was formed in an arc using a 238 Ring Roller from Shop Outfitters. The handles on each side were fashioned with 1/2″ hot rolled round and cut and bent on a Shop Outfitters HandiBend with Pressbreak. Cut 1″ X 1/8″ angle iron serves as mounting racks for the grill.
A coat of high temperature flat black paint was applied as a finishing touch and to protect the steel from rusting.
